Year in industry / sandwich placement
Taken between your penultimate and final year. Counts towards your degree, pays a salary, and dramatically improves your graduate job prospects. Available at most major pharma and biotech companies.
Summer internship
Shorter paid programmes over the summer. Good for first and second year students. Often a pipeline into graduate schemes — many companies hire their interns directly after graduation.
NHS lab insight placement
Unpaid or bursary-funded insight placements in NHS pathology labs. Essential for IBMS accreditation portfolio and for demonstrating commitment to a BMS career when applying for Band 5 roles.
Research project placement
Lab-based placements at universities or research institutes, often linked to a funded PhD project. Good stepping stone if you're considering a research career or academic route.
